[caug] Summary of CAUG meeting on October 3rd about Strata 3D software!

Hi everyone,<div><br></div><div>We met yesterday, Wednesday, October 3rd, at Whitney Young High School. Our speaker was Christian Moore, who is an extremely good 3D artist using Strata software, and a Strata 3D trainer.</div><div><br></div><div>Christian lives in Cincinnati, and we arranged a live video feed. We were able to see his full screen on our projector, and Whitney Young allowed us to use one of their best projectors, so it was a very good visual experience. The audio went in and out, and I had to ask Christian to repeat things so that people could understand what he was saying. The video came through just fine. We will make sure that this is fixed next time we do a presentation via live video.</div><div><br></div><div>Christian focused on the 3D Strata Software, called <a href="http://www.strata.com/products/strata_3d_cx_suite/strata_design_3d_cx/">Strata 3D CX</a>. He walked us through many of the features of the software, from basic through some of the advanced features. First he briefly discussed the history of Strata, and how the software works with Adobe products. Many of the keystrokes are the same, many of the design ideas are the same. If someone knows Illustrator or Photoshop, they will have a good start learning Strata 3D CX. The big difference here is thinking in 3D. It's extremely important to know where the floor is, and where each object is in relation to the floor and each other. The first examples he showed us were simple, and made it easier to understand how to start thinking in 3D.</div><div><br></div><div>He showed us how to make primitives including cubes, spheres, and other objects. Then he had fun showing us how to change the objects by editing their paths, and use those changes to make other 3D objects. We saw him extrude objects, rotate them, align them, and much more. He did the quick image of two faces that also look like a lamp (it's a famous optical illusion) and then made it 3D, then he played with the objects properties, such as thinness, direction, and more. There are ways to add lights, cameras and action (yes, the pro level software can do animations), Boolean operations (similar to Illustrator), scripting, and many more tools. The software ships with many 3D objects included, so that gets people off to a fast start making 3D scenes.</div><div><br></div><div>Christian also introduced us to <a href="http://stratacafe.com">stratacafe.com</a>, a huge resource of free 3D items. The gallery alone includes architecture, textures, products, sci-fi items, and much more. All of these work with Strata products, and are free to use. The Strata Cafe also includes 3D discussion boards, tips, tweaks, challenges, and much more. It's a wonderful resource for Mac users making 3D! It's possible to use just the art from Strata Cafe and not need to draw anything yourself to create a beautiful 3D project.</div><div><br></div><div>The software is extremely fast, there are many different kinds of rendering, and the output is professional quality, even on the consumer level software.</div><div><br></div><div>He concluded by showing us examples of some of his own work, and how it rendered on his Mac. The 3D work integrated very well with Photoshop and Illustrator. This is an amazing and free Macintosh only tool to create multi-touch books for the iPad. It¹s only about an ounce lighter than the 4S and a few millimeters thinner, but each marks a 20 percent slim-down and it¹s immediately apparent. It feels great in your hand, and the new display looks terrific. The contrast is super-sharp and the colors are agile and accurate; a movie on the iPhone 5 looks way better than it does on another phone with ³true² HD. </p><p>The screen is beautiful. That¹s beyond debate. The size is going to be a mite controversial, I reckon. Apple increased the size of the iPhone¹s display by lengthening it instead of enlarging both dimensions. So unlike many of the ³phablets² available from other makers, the iPhone is still a manageable, narrow phone that fits into most pockets, and it¹s easier to operate one-handed. </p><p>But there are equally valid advantages to making a wider phone. Most of the wins of a big phone are in screen width. The keyboard is larger and easier to operate, and books and Web pages and messages are easier read thanks to the wider margins. And for all of the ads promising the ease of onehanded operation, I found myself regularly shifting the iPhone 5 in my hand to reach the top margins of the screen. It¹s certainly easier to operate one-handed than the Samsung Galaxy S III, but still, its not as easy to use as an iPhone 4S. For this and only this reason, I recommend that an existing iPhone 4 or 3GS user try out an iPhone 5 at an Apple Store instead of ordering one blind. </p><p>And if you don¹t want a bigger phone, that¹s fine, too. The price drop on the iPhone 4S is just as big a piece of news as the iPhone 5. At $99, it¹s hands-down the greatest value in smartphones today. </p><p>The iPhone 5 is being released into a new environment. This the first time I haven¹t said, ³This is the right upgrade for every iPhone owner² and issued a blanket recommendation. It¹s also the first year I¹ve seen Android phones that could be as compelling to a certain kind of user as the iPhone. If you use your phone a little like a tablet, well, devices like the Google Nexus or the Samsung Galaxy S III are like little tablets. And with Android 4.1, Google has finally gotten its act together. </p><p>There¹s one element of the iPhone that no Android maker can duplicate, though: the iPhone¹s ³umami.² There is a savoriness about that device that is uniquely Apple¹s. And like actual flavor, it¹s something that can never be described  only experienced. </p>

When used as a wireless access point, the iPhone 5 can deliver faster Internet to your laptop than your home service. </p><p>Physically, it¹s a charmer. It¹s only about an ounce lighter than the 4S and a few millimeters thinner, but each marks a 20 percent slim-down and it¹s immediately apparent. It feels great in your hand, and the new display looks terrific. The contrast is super-sharp and the colors are agile and accurate; a movie on the iPhone 5 looks way better than it does on another phone with ³true² HD. </p><p>The screen is beautiful. That¹s beyond debate. The size is going to be a mite controversial, I reckon. Apple increased the size of the iPhone¹s display by lengthening it instead of enlarging both dimensions. So unlike many of the ³phablets² available from other makers, the iPhone is still a manageable, narrow phone that fits into most pockets, and it¹s easier to operate one-handed. </p><p>But there are equally valid advantages to making a wider phone. Most of the wins of a big phone are in screen width. The keyboard is larger and easier to operate, and books and Web pages and messages are easier read thanks to the wider margins. And for all of the ads promising the ease of onehanded operation, I found myself regularly shifting the iPhone 5 in my hand to reach the top margins of the screen. It¹s certainly easier to operate one-handed than the Samsung Galaxy S III, but still, its not as easy to use as an iPhone 4S. For this and only this reason, I recommend that an existing iPhone 4 or 3GS user try out an iPhone 5 at an Apple Store instead of ordering one blind. </p><p>And if you don¹t want a bigger phone, that¹s fine, too. The price drop on the iPhone 4S is just as big a piece of news as the iPhone 5. At $99, it¹s hands-down the greatest value in smartphones today. </p><p>The iPhone 5 is being released into a new environment. This the first time I haven¹t said, ³This is the right upgrade for every iPhone owner² and issued a blanket recommendation. It¹s also the first year I¹ve seen Android phones that could be as compelling to a certain kind of user as the iPhone. If you use your phone a little like a tablet, well, devices like the Google Nexus or the Samsung Galaxy S III are like little tablets. And with Android 4.1, Google has finally gotten its act together. </p><p>There¹s one element of the iPhone that no Android maker can duplicate, though: the iPhone¹s ³umami.² There is a savoriness about that device that is uniquely Apple¹s. And like actual flavor, it¹s something that can never be described  only experienced. </p>

[caug] Free Wi-Fi is great but beware password thieves

<p>Andy Ihnatko, Chicago Sun-Times </p><p>I¹m happy that Chicago is championing free Wi-Fi in public spaces. Honest. I¹m writing this column from a bench in a public park, for real, on my iPhone. While all around me, tourists unpocket devices to check maps. </p><p>But there are two problems with free public Wi-Fi that you need to keep firmly in your forebrain before connecting to that access point. </p><p>The first access point is in Millennium Park, where hundreds of thousands of tourists come to nest. Which means it¹ll be a prime target for any no-goodnik who wants to hijack Wi-Fi traffic for passwords and other personal information. </p><p>You need to suspect only the people with pockets. Any one of them could hold a compact, affordable device that autonomously intercepts open Wi-Fi communications and can in many cases even break the encryption protecting common Wi-Fi security protocols. </p><p>So don¹t even think of using any unsecured public Wi-Fi without adding your own private tunnel of security. Connect to the access point and then immediately flip a switch in your computer¹s network settings that activates VPN. A virtual private network service routes every byte of your traffic through an encrypted server and is immune from third-party access by all but the most extraordinary of means. And after you¹ve enabled it, you just use all of your Internet apps and services as usual. </p><p>I subscribe to the WiTopia service, <a href="http://www.witopia.net/">www.witopia.net</a>. It¹s easy to set up, works with all of my laptops, phones and tablets and it costs just $50 a year. I¹m covered in parks, coffee shops, hotels . . . everywhere. </p><p>³But I only connect to secure sites, with <a href="https://¹">https://¹</a> URLs, and I always check for the little padlock in my browser that confirms everything¹s secure.² </p><p>Good, you should do that. It won¹t help you if a site is well-spoofed, or if an interloper¹s software is telling your browser what it thinks you want to hear. Plus: Accidents happen. </p><p>Public Wi-Fi is beset by mundane security problems, too. A bench, a pair of binoculars, a pad of paper and four hours of patience could yield a lot of valuable login data. Be aware of shoulder-surfers. </p><p>The other problem with public Wi-Fi: You can¹t count on it. You can generally count on Wi-Fi in public libraries (because librarians have ³information access² in their RNA). With all other spots, it¹ll be a crapshoot. Particularly when 133 tourists are all trying to Skype video of this weird giant chrome bean to their friends. </p><p>I am indeed writing this column in a public park. That was no jive. But I¹m doing it via my phone¹s 4G connection. A friend of mine who spends six weeks out of every year camping tells me: ³The only supplies you can count on and the only ones you can absolutely trust are the ones you carry with you.² He¹s a smart guy, apart from his preference for spending his vacation sleeping behind two layers of nylon instead of several layers of concierges and doormen. </p>
